Music quiz! Let's see what you can guess.

So, inspired by [info]sabotabby, I'm going to list lines of lyrics from some music that I have and/or listen to and see if you can guess it. After someone guesses it, I'll edit to add their name next to the tune. You get one point for artist and one point for song. The one with the most points wins a prize. Some of these will be obscure and some will not. I will try to make them in English as much as possible. Don't cheat by googling!

See below the cut, and then answer in comments:

Guess the music! )

I tried to mix up the genres, let's see how you do.

Women in Refrigerators

In light of *ahem* certain hackneyed plot points in one big blockbuster film (so I hear) and one popular internet vignette made by a self-named male feminist popping up of late, I thought I'd pass on this particular website.

Women in refrigerators is a website about the comics (and elsewhere, but especially comics) phenomenon of the main male character and/or villain getting their character development through the torture, rape, or murder, or otherwise depowering of the female characters in their lives. It's named for the particularly disturbing example of one guy's girlfriend being found in a refrigerator.

In fact, this device is used for the female's "character development" as well.

From the site:

"Not every woman in comics has been killed, raped, depowered, crippled, turned evil, maimed, tortured, contracted a disease or had other life-derailing tragedies befall her, but given the following list (originally compiled by Gail, with later additions and changes), it's hard to think up exceptions:"

The list is here: http://www.unheardtaunts.com/wir/women.html

And the site had reactions by many comics artists to the site posted. Not all of the men, but a great many of them are defensive and/or making excuses for the tired old tradition of not giving women agency. Some of the men are apologetic, but with the aim of making themselves not look bad, not changing this practice. I admit I haven't read them all, I got too annoyed. The responses from women (all working in the comic industry, all lovers of comics, mind you, you gotta be critical of the things you love) are the best.

Excerpt from Joan Hilty (editor, DC Comics):
"The response that 'male characters get killed too' is completely disingenuous. You only need to have the faintest grasp of feminist or semiotic theory to know that it's not just how often it's done, it's HOW it's done and TO WHOM certain things are done. The sexually violent visual language of how these women get killed is remarkably consistent. Really, the larger reality is that American mainstream comics, built by guys for guys on the crumbling foundations of superhero fantasy, remain intensely hostile to women, consciously and subconsciously. As political and cultural landscapes shift and evolve worldwide and it gets harder and harder for white guys to retain their perceived right to run the world, you can see the frustration act itself out in various forms of hideous backlash -- everything from "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?" to Katma Tui.

The response that superhero comics are aimed at a particular audience is also lame, especially when it's been long been public knowledge that the industry is suffering. Any successful form of mass entertainment learns to adapt to popular taste to reach wider audiences. When people lost interest in Westerns, Hollywood stopped making westerns. When people lost interest in serial fiction, the Saturday Evening Post stopped publishing. Comics, for some reason, thinks it's a world apart. So the train keeps hurtling towards the cliff edge, and everyone suffers."

Not one to mince words! (Her full response here: http://www.unheardtaunts.com/wir/c-jhilty.html

The rest of the responses are here: http://www.unheardtaunts.com/wir/creators.html

In short, shame on you, Joss Whedon!

I'm going on tour again!

Well, sort of. Stereolab is coming out with a new album in August, and I've already pre-ordered the Japanese version with 3 extra tracks from CD Japan. They have a neat rewards program. The snippets I've heard from the album are absolutely gorgeous. They had been falling a bit flat lately in my opinion, but this album seems like it's going to be golden. What a difference not touring for 4 years makes. It's called Chemical Chords.

According to Tim Gane, he actually made 30 something tracks, and picked 15 at random from the album, and may release the others in some odd way.

Here is the aforementioned interview on Pitchfork (yes I know they can be pretentious, but focus on Tim Gane's answers):
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/50134-stereolabs-tim-gane-talks-ichemical-chordsi

Here is a preview track called "Three Women":
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/download/50270-stereolab-three-women-mp3stream

So, why I'm on tour. I always see Stereolab more than once when they tour, so I end up going on tour, as it were.

Here is the list of North American dates from http://stereolab.co.uk/news/:

09-20 Costa Mesa, CA - Detroit Bar
09-21 Pomona, CA - Glass House
09-24 Austin, TX - La Zona Rosa
09-26 Atlanta, GA - Variety Playhouse
09-27 Athens, GA - 40 Watt Club
09-29 Carrboro, NC - Cat's Cradle
09-30 Washington, DC - 9:30 Club
10-01 Philadelphia, PA - Trocadero
10-02 New York, NY - Irving Plaza
10-03 New York, NY - Irving Plaza
10-04 New York, NY - Irving Plaza
10-06 Boston, MA - Paradise *
10-07 Montreal, Quebec - Club Soda *
10-08 Toronto, Ontario - Phoenix Concert Theatre *
10-09 Detroit, MI - The Crofoot *
10-10 Chicago, IL - Vic Theatre *
10-12 Minneapolis, MN - First Avenue *
10-14 Denver, CO - Gothic Theatre *
10-17 Seattle, WA - Showbox *

10-22 San Francisco, CA - The Fillmore *
10-23 Los Angeles, CA - Henry Fonda Theatre *
10-24 Solana Beach, CA - Belly Up Tavern *

* with Monade

Bolded ones I'm definitely going to, italicized ones are maybe. If I can take that Friday in October off, I'll go to the other one at Irving Plaza that I have italicized. Either way, I'll be in NYC the weekend of the 4th of October.

I will be doing no shenanigans like trying to get backstage this time. I have been invited backstage a few times in the 15 years I have been a fan, and I have no need to do that anymore. I think that I should just keep it low key and enjoy the show. Though, I still like grabbing the set list and then giving it away to a newbie :).

So, who will be joining me? Who will be into a meal or something in NYC or what have you?

The first one was recommended to me by [info]ladyjax and it rocks! It's Carolina Chocolate Drops performing their version of "Hit 'Em Up Style" by Blu Cantrell

Here is the same group performing an old time song called "Georgie Buck" that I really like the harmony on

The following is a fan video of Lupe Fiasco's "Intruder Alert" which to my ears sounds like it sampled Chrono Trigger (though it probably didn't) let me know if you hear it

Found a copy of this DS game through Best Buy's locator thingy online (it's backordered everywhere). There was a copy at the Security Sq. branch of the store. Kick ass!

So far I am loving this game. It's absolutely incredible and original. It's set in Tokyo in the Shibuya district, and I now want to visit just to see if the landmarks are the same, tee hee. It rocks. I'm not going to spoil it. The battles are fun too. You like have to control two people at once. I'm still getting the hang of all the features.

Is there anyone else on my list who has a copy of it that lives nearby, so we can do the mingling communication feature? Or even anyone who has a DS and plays any old game with wireless, so I can pick you up too. This will give me features in game. Or anyone you know who has a DS, haha. I should so carry it around on mingle at Otakon, that would be so incredibly funny.

I think I'm going to trade back in the Final Fantasy Revenant Wings game to Gamestop (because I can within 7 days of buying it, because it was used). It pales in comparison.

They need to make a game in this universe for the ps3, with multiplayer.

Indiana Jones 4 Review

Ok, like, this movie was made for people who apparently don't know the difference between the Incas and the Maya. Unless they somehow moved countries in the movie, and I didn't pick up on it.

Also, having people jump out of ruins in ancient style clothing (regionally incorrect, I might add) is really stupid, as the only people dressing that way these days are like buskers in the square of the tourist cities. To be specific for Mayans, nowadays those that live in the forested areas wear a simple single-color tunic (I've seen white, green, or brown), but farmers and city dwellers might wear a shirt or blouse, possibly a wool shirt for the men, neckerchief, hat in some cases, and the women wear a colorful skirt held up by a belt. Heck, they might wear Western clothing, imagine that!

The modern descendants of the Incas, who according to [info]khalinche are speaking accurate Quechua in the film, were actually dressed like irl, when in town, that is. In the ruins, they were either dressed like ancient Maya or like face painted caricatures, one of which, incidentally was played by Ernie Reyes, Jr., so the credits tell me.

Oh, and I'm not only concerned about the clothing. The whole use of people looking like ancient so called "savage" people to jump out in order to be mowed over like in a video game was sadly typical and really dehumanizing.

Anyhow, big giant fail on that account. If you can put in all these interesting references to past movies, and have people speaking accurate Quechua (which is a language, not a "dialect" thank you, and another language of that area would be Aymara), then you can very well non mix up your countries and peoples. How dumb. Especially him bringing up Pancho Villa of all people. No, this isn't really a spoiler. You knew shit like this would happen, right? Right.

Now then, on to the spoilers.
Also, wtf? )

Now that I'm done venting, I will say I enjoyed the action scenes, and it had amusing parts. It's worth seeing just to see what happens, but see a matinee like I did, or some other cost-saving measure of your choice. The movie in general was so-so and fanservice, and I like my peoples of the world accurate and respected. It's not the only culprit on the latter account, so I'm not letting others off the hook either.

Still, it's not absolutely painfully awful like Indiana Jones 2. That one should be erased and we should forget it ever existed.

Now, I am waiting for The Mysterious Cities of Gold to come out on DVD in the states. It's already out in Britain and should be out here by the end of the year. *That* show is awesome. (see icon)

What American accent do you have?
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net

Mid-Atlantic. This is what everyone calls a Philadelphia accent although it's also the accent of south Jersey, Baltimore, and Wilmington. Well, everyone that lives near there, that is. Outsiders can tell you talk differently from them even though they can't tell what your accent is.

If you are not from there, you are probably one of the following:
(a) A New Yorker who, unlike most New Yorkers, rhymes "on" with "dawn"; or
(b) A Yat from New Orleans.
You are probably not from Eastern New England or the Great Lakes area, and certainly not from anywhere in the West or Canada.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

This is no surprise at all, considering that where I grew up and where I now live are in that description. :)

I've Been Listening to Top 40! (mostly)

A month or two ago this might have been more interesting. But, I have been listening to top 40, and I have not bought music in ages.

I have been tagged! by [info]chr0me_kitten.

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to.

In no particular order:
1. "See You Again" - Miley Cyrus (hangs head in shame, but it's a bangin dance tune!)
2. "Superstar" - Lupe Fiasco
3. "Don't Stop the Music" - Rihanna (and pretty much all her more dance or dancehall songs)
4. "4 Minutes (To Save the World)" - Madonna
5. "Cut Dem Off" - Ricky Blaze (something I downloaded from the Mad Decent blog, sort of electro dancehall-ish track)
6. "Creator" - Santogold (the beats on this one are the best)
7. "Tu y Yo" - Thalia

I tag...[info]sabotabby, [info]frandroid, [info]ranger_hotsauce, [info]vees, [info]phil_g, [info]khalinche, and [info]misshallelujah.

If you've done this one before or simply don't want to do it, no worries.

http://oukosher.org/index.php/passover/article/kitnios/

Wow. I apologize if you don't know all the words in there. I can translate if you really want me to. I knew some of this but not all. It's an article by the OU folk who do kosher certifying of commercial food products about what kitniot(kitnios in Ashkenazi spelling) are and why. Kitniot are certain foods that custom (minhag) prohibits on passover, but are not prohibited from Sephardi people. This includes things like rice, corn, beans, soy, some nuts, some seeds, etc.

Quinoa is not kitniot, apparently, but you must check all the grains in your package to see if any chametz(leavening or the 5 grains of wheat, oats, spelt, barley, rye) got mixed in there.

It's a pretty extensive litany. Looks like we did some things wrong at my house growing up (like eating mustard), but hey you know, it's extra anyhow!

Lordy, lordy. I think I needed all this to tell me that my boring every day life is ok, and that I'm not all that far gone in the head.

First this about Robert Irvine pretending to be knighted and other silly things:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7274743.stm

I had watched Dinner: Impossible and enjoyed it, and he seemed fairly talented. I had no idea he had made such claims.

He reportedly also claimed to have cooked for US presidents in the White House, was a friend of Prince Charles and had been knighted by the Queen. He also apparently helped to make the cake for Prince Charles and Lady Diana's wedding.

Then this, which is just about the polar opposite (pretending to be poor and in a gang):

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/04/books/04fake.html

In “Love and Consequences,” a critically acclaimed memoir published last week, Margaret B. Jones wrote about her life as a half-white, half-Native American girl growing up in South-Central Los Angeles as a foster child among gang-bangers, running drugs for the Bloods. The problem is that none of it is true.

Good lord. You should see (and hear) the shit she spouted in interviews. Also reading around on the internets, she apparently had affected the persona for ages before even writing the book. This is ridiculously offensive.

Here's her interview: http://www.scribd.com/full/2214218?access_key=key-12fb1rkhg5hjncvgoity
Here's the radio show: http://www.onpointradio.org/shows/2008/02/20080229_b_main.asp

And then finally the bizarre:

http://www.cbc.ca/arts/books/story/2008/02/29/jewish-memoir-wolves.html?ref=rss

A Belgian writer has admitted her bestselling memoir about how she lived with a pack of wolves in the woods to escape from the Nazis during the Second World War was fabricated.

Raised by wolves? Oy.
